Dom Kennedy’s latest album From the Westside with Love is in heavy rotation on my ipod. The album dropped a few months back, but I’ve only recently given it a thorough listen. And I’m glad I did! For those unfamiliar with Dom, he’s an independent artist based here in Los Angeles. If you haven’t heard of him, you will soon, because dude is on the come up. His music is super dope, dude definitely has mass appeal. From the Westside with Love is female friendly, but not too soft to where a guy wouldn’t like it. Dom has a smooth flow reminiscent of Bun B and Fabolous (lofty comparisons but when you listen to the album you’ll see what I mean). Click the link below to download. Don’t say I never gave you nothing!
Hope everyone’s having a good week. Things have been shaky over here on the west coast; we had a pretty sizable earthquake in LA this week. It was a weird one too, it was more like a rolling wave rather than a big shake up. Oscar Grant’s murderer got off the hook on an involuntary manslaughter verdict. I hope Grant’s family gets proper due in a civil suit. Every dog has its day….
Its important to remember that as bad as things may get, it doesn’t stay that way. Sometimes you have to take the good with the bad, you have to do bad to do good….check out today’s throwback video to hear the inspiration behind my words. Until we meet again…have a great weekeend, and stay positive!
I decided to post this video because the mantra is so true – if you stay ready, you ain’t got to get ready. Suga Free gave up so much game onhis aptly named album Street Gospel, it deserves a thorough listen based on the strength of knowledge and game. A lot of shit he talks about goes over most peoples’ heads…it’s one of those things where if you can’t decipher the messages presented through tales of pimping, it’s not really for you. But if you can appreciate a real nigga chopping game, its worth a listen.
Pimps have a colorful reputation, for both good and bad reasons. I’ve always been intrigued by the nature of a pimp, someone who influence others to do things (or not do things) simply by spitting game at them. Whether its pimping hoes, pimping the system, your job, or whatever, we can all learn something from a pimp. We can’t really hate the player, just the game.
“Pimp of the Year” is one of our theme songs at work…its one of our main musical reference points. Working for a company, they’re pimping us, we’re pimping them…its an even exchange. Daaaaaaamn…pimp on…..
I’m not sure if this is a street joint or a single from the upcoming Red Album, but this is a hot track. I’m loving the signature Neptune sound, it fits well with Game’s flow.
A ghetto love is the law that we live by…the imagery in this video is such an accurate representation of many aspects of black love. Angry, beautiful, and passionate. Fight hard, love hard.
Loves J*Davey. Their music is so eclectic, I love their neo-funk style. I happened to catch them at the Roxy a few weeks ago, Jack Davey is an awesome performer. She has that “it” factor that many lack. Check out the new video “Outta the Window.”
“Freak Like Me” is one of my personal anthems. Every girl has a few theme songs in her music library, this is one of mine. When this song released in 1995, I was way too young to be anyone’s freak, but I’m sure you can sense by now I was fast. Thankfully I’ve gotten most of the hot assness out of my system (mostly!).
This video is really dope because it was shot on Crenshaw back in the day when it was THE place to kick it. Hitting the ’shaw with the homies was akin to going to the club…mad people, mad music, mad cars. People from all over the city would hit the ’shaw on weekends, especially on Sundays, to floss and mack. I know a few people who met their baby daddies/mamas on Crenshaw.
On that note, enjoy your weekend babies, we’ll chat on Monday. Peace! XOXO
When I posted the lineup for Coachella 2010 back in January, the weekend of April 16 seemed so far off. Now, it’s about a week away, and it’s time to think about what to wear. Fashion is a huge part of the experience, music festivals inspire the need to express your style and individuality. I love people watching at shows and festivals, especially in a place like LA, where image rules.
Check out these must-haves from a couple of awesome independent designers, Los Angeles based Kid Dangerous and New York based David & Young. The black and white fedora style sunhat is super cute. I already copped my “LA Don’t <3 U” tee for all the haters out there! Holla at me if you see me in the streets!
Eazy-E is an important artist to my experience as a hip hop fan. As a girl raised in Compton, CA, Eazy E, NWA, DJ Quik ran through my musical veins. I have fond memories of hearing “Real Muthaf**** G’s” blasting from 808s on the back of Impalas, El Caminos, and Regals in the hood. Eazy-E’s music was the local soundtrack for gangbangers who secretly wanted to be rappers. My adult ears finds Eazy-E’s music totally inapporpriate to my adolescent ears, but at the time, this shit banged.
