What About Working for a Living?

It doesn’t seem to occur to people to get a damn job. First Kelis demands (and wins) tens of thousands of dollars per month in child support from Nas, now Big Pun’s widow is crying broke and claiming she and her children are living in a shelter. Coming from a single parent home, I know firsthand the plight of a single mom. I watched my mother struggle sometimes to take care of myself and my little sister. Millions of women make ends meet for their for their families on far less money than these women. These chicks need a major reality check.

In Kelis’s case, she’s taken care of. She’s set. Her child support award gives her more than enough money to take care of herself and her baby. I agree that Nas needs to support his child, but $40,000 a month? That’s more than some people make in a year. Yes, I’m hating. Maybe I should go the rapper baby mama route instead of having a career.  Fuck me for earning an honest living, that’s my bad. I know when you become accustomed to living a certain lifestyle you can’t go back from that. I live in California, a place where such ideals are mandated under community property law. If you marry a rich dude in Cali with no prenup, be prepared to come up! But I digress.

Kelis has her own money, it just seems selfish for her to hit Nas’s pockets like that. She had a successful career before she married him.  I just have a difficult time believing it costs $40,000 a month to raise a child. I think she could get by on $10k-$15k. Is Nas even balling like that? Even Diddy was ordered to pay his BM $30,000 in child support. He makes way more money than Nas. All Nas does is rap, he isn’t the most diverse hip hop artist when it comes to multiple income streams. This is the exact reason men tend to drag their feet on committing and marrying women, because if they link up with the wrong one, it’s financially detrimental.

As far as Big Pun’s widow, Liza Rios, how come she just doesn’t get a job? She’s crying broke, talking about how that $160,000 from Pun’s publishing went through her fingers like water. It’s possible that Pun’s legacy wasn’t worth as much money as she thought. He could have gotten a bad deal from the record label. Clearly I don’t know her and what she’s gone through, but why not get a job? She should have used some of that money to get some skills so she can take care of her family. Or hell, find another husband to take care of you. Anything. A woman should never be broke, whether you work, hustle, or do whatever you have to do to support yourself and your children.

I know Kelis doesn’t give a shit about what I say, because she’s obviously making waaaay more money than I will likely see in a long ass time. And Mrs. Rios would prolly shank me in the streets for my words. But it doesn’t change the fact that these women seem like shiftless lazy chicks who have an aversion to working.

Be Choosy About Your “Bad Boy”

Posted under: Love & Relationships

I like street dudes. There’s nothing sexier than a man who will shank someone on your behalf, or call the goons to take care of it for him. During my teenage years I had boyfriends who banged, yet treated me like a queen. It was fun and cute then, but not so much now that I’m a grown woman.

As an adult, I still appreciate a man with street tendencies, but he needs to be able to quell it when necessary. If often hear men say they need “a lady in the streets and a freak in the bed.” Well I need a guy who can be a soldier in the streets of life, and can be a man to me and take care of business. I need to be able to take him with me to a classy event, as well as on a run to pick up trees. I see many young women in their early 20s and even older who have much going for themselves, yet still get caught up with the “banger” types like I used to date in high school (ok, and in college a little too). Young women who have education, good jobs, come from good families, and have bright futures ahead of them. With young men whose future may likely entail the streets, jail, or a coffin. There isn’t anything wrong with dating a hood dude, as long as he has a job, is motivated to be successful, and  has a plan for his future. But if his future looks bleak, as long as you continue to stay with him, so will yours.

I’m not instructing young women to not consider dating men from dire circumstances. It is entirely possible to find diamonds in the rough. What I am saying is to be mindful of who you spend your time with, consider whether they are adding anything to your life, or bringing you down. If you are with someone and they are headed for destruction, don’t ignore the signs. Ask yourself if that’s what you want for yourself and your future. Even if there is a child involved, you do not have to be stuck. Look out for #1, YOU.

Her Love Must Be Whoa…

That’s some hood love right there. I’m sure you’ve heard by now that Jermaine Dupri went and inked himself in honor of his boo, Miss Janet Jackson. That ish looks like it hurt! I really hope their relationship is everlasting, because inking yourself is a permanent move. Most people I know who have gotten tattoos in honor of their significant others aren’t with the honoree anymore. Let’s hope JD and Damita Jo are an exception, they’re sweet together.

Friday Throwback Vid: Mya Ft. Jay Z “Best of Me Remix”

Man! Put this joint on in a party TODAY, and watch that shit pop off. This is def my era in hip hop, maybe the 3rd, 4th wave or so. Jigga, Trackmasters, DJ Clue, Hype Williams as the video director…they had the game on lock! You think DJ Khaled is annoying? Sheeit. Clue hollaaaaad over everyone’s track for a good three year run. I love the hip hop legacy of the distinctively voiced, slightly annoying but endearing DJ. Maybe inspiration for a future post…

Ok, enough reminiscing over a bygone era! Check the vid.

Mya’s jersey dress is killing me in hindsight. But I won’t front like I wasn’t rocking it then. :-)

Skillz- “For Real (He Don’t Own Me)”

Posted under: Love & Relationships

Got Skillz? This severely underrated artist does the year end wrap up, like every year. That joint be like 15 minutes long, no lie. It always hilarious though. It’s a well-rapped culmination of the entire year, in like 100 bars. Check out the past 5 or 6 year end wrap ups here: http://therapup.uproxx.com/2007/12/the-rap-up-2002-2006.html. I just learned Skillz was from VA; DC Metro is killing the game in 08 and into 09.

This video has a sunny, breezy, feel good vibe to it. It kind of reminds me of DMX’s “Hows It Going Down.” A ghetto love triangle, set to hip hop music. “For Real” is for the ladies and the men who want to steal them from their men, lol.
