Dom Kennedy’s latest album From the Westside with Love is in heavy rotation on my ipod. The album dropped a few months back, but I’ve only recently given it a thorough listen. And I’m glad I did! For those unfamiliar with Dom, he’s an independent artist based here in Los Angeles. If you haven’t heard of him, you will soon, because dude is on the come up. His music is super dope, dude definitely has mass appeal. From the Westside with Love is female friendly, but not too soft to where a guy wouldn’t like it. Dom has a smooth flow reminiscent of Bun B and Fabolous (lofty comparisons but when you listen to the album you’ll see what I mean). Click the link below to download. 5 Hip-Hop Songs You Should NOT Listen to at Work

I listen to music all day while I’m working. It gets me through those long days in the trenches, slanging advertising space. It’s not much different from any other hustle, but I digress.

I mostly listen to hip hop at work. Some days I listen to jazz, soulful house, funk, or alternative…but I default to good old fashioned hip hop. I’ve found that there are certain songs and artists that are appropriate to listen to while at work, and others that aren’t. I’ve been known to throw a side eye or two at people after listening to certain songs. Like…

1. Too Short – “Blow The Whistle”

Its nice to feel like a pimp, especially when I’m slanging advertising inventory. But the pimp vibe tends to go too far when I catch myself singing aloud “what’s my favorite word? [biatch] gotta say it like short [biatch].”

2. Lil Jon “Bia, Bia”

The ultimate fight song, which makes me feel like randonmly tossing my desk throwing a stapler at the idiot who took my stuff off the printer. WHOTHEFUCKGRABBEDMYSHITOFFTHEPRINTER!?!?! Bia, Bia!

3. Ice Cube “What Should I Do? (Taadow)

Listening to Ice Cube at work makes me angry at the system, even when if nothing in particular has happened to piss me off. Annoying coworker coming at me with another bad joke? “I don’t have time to listen to your insipid humor while my people are suffering from institutionalized discrimation.” One run of “AmeriKKKas Most Wanted” will do it to you, especially on a Monday morning.

4. Bonecrusher “Never Scared”

That supervisor working my nerves? Shut down. “Never Scared” may cause someone to get cursed the hell out (in professional speak, of course).

5. Anything by Tupac

‘Pac’s music stirs the inner revolutionary in all of us. Listen to one go ’round of the Pac playlist at work and you may end up walking out that piece and not coming back.

What’s your cooking soundtrack?

I need music for everything. I listen to music while I work, while I blog, when I clean my house, even when I shop. So invariably, I need to listen to music when I cook.

My cooking soundtrack depends on my mood, and the dish I’m making. Afro-latin beat is great for when I’m making Arroz Con Pollo, Arepas, or Chicken Fajitas. When I’m making Jambalaya or Fried Chicken with a side of Southern Cabbage and Cornbread, I like to listen to Juvenile, UGK…any Southern rap track containing high amounts of bass. When I’m chopping veggies and making sauces, I like listening to something with jazzy hip-hop influences, like Foreign Exchange, Slum Village, or A Tribe Called Quest.

To my cooks out there, what do you listen to when you cook? What music inspires you in the kitchen?

Well look who has resurfaced! Looks like Kanye’s been making good use of his hiatus from the limelight and brought us some good quality music. Kanye’s teamed up with Dwele for “Power,” from his upcoming LP Good Ass Job. I think its a great song, the composition is hard-hitting and resonates well with the tone of his lyrics. Take a listen….can’t wait for the album to drop!

Pimps have a colorful reputation, for both good and bad reasons. I’ve always been intrigued by the nature of a pimp, someone who influence others to do things (or not do things) simply by spitting game at them. Whether its pimping hoes, pimping the system, your job, or whatever, we can all learn something from a pimp. We can’t really hate the player, just the game.

“Pimp of the Year” is one of our theme songs at work…its one of our main musical reference points. Working for a company, they’re pimping us, we’re pimping them…its an even exchange. Daaaaaaamn…pimp on…..

Foxy being emo on The Mo’nique Show

Emo ass Virgos! Glad to see Foxy Boogie on the scene. She spoke with Mo’nique about losing her hearing, alluding to some of the trials and tribulations she’s been through over the past few years. The way Foxy broke down upon seeing Pam Grier and Mo’nique…it’s clear she’s been through some serious stuff. Through it all, it seems Foxy is still humble, so good for her! In the meantime, I’m patiently waiting for a comeback. Trials and tribulations make for great musical inspiration.

Scarface is in my top five favorite rappers, hands down. I listen to his greatest hits album pretty regularly, especially when I’m feeling emo.

What makes this song so great? The fact that its really nasty, and it about straight up fucking. Sometimes you want to make love, sometimes you just want to fuck. Nothing personal…it’s just about pure physical pleasure.

Freeway is one of my fave Rocafella almuni. He has an uncommon voice, but his flow and delivery are fucking dope. And I love that his production is always on point, it never ceases to impress. As a Cali girl I don’t really know how I developed an appreciation for Philly rap, but hey. Good music is good music, it just speaks to you.

“She Makes Me Feel Alright” is the second release from The Stimulus Package. This video captures the fantasies of many men…keep dreaming guys! Love the ending tho….XOXO
