Fashion Craving: Leopard Print

Posted under: Fashion & Beauty

Sometimes I have fashion cravings, in the same way I have food cravings. Sometimes I have a taste for something leather, other times I desire something airy and flowery. I may want a dress, a skirt, or a pair of heels. Today, I’m craving leopard print. I’m feeling primal and animalistic right now, and a leopard print item would really represent my current aesthetic.

Is animal print “in style”? I really have no idea. In my mind leopard print, or any animal print for that matter, is a timeless and classic pattern. While I love being current on what’s “in,” my fashion style has always been to wear whatever I feel like wearing. And right now, I feel like wearing leopard print!

I found some super cute pieces around the web that I’d love to share with you. Enjoy, and use as inspiration if you’re into leopard print!

Spring Trend: Flowers

Posted under: Fashion & Beauty

I’m a ghetto hippie, and hippie girls love flowers. The floral trend is very “in” for spring. A floral print dress on a dark background, a pair of flower-print leggings, or just a simple floral print tank will do the job. Check out a few pieces inspired by this spring’s floral trend, from some of my favorite online stores.

Fun Fitness: Bollywood Dance Workout

I’m a huge yoga fan, but I like to vary my workout routine by practicing different genres of fitness. My latest fascination is belly dance, its so much fun and makes me feel feminine and sexy. The moves are simple, they make me sweat, and when I look in the mirror after a belly dance workout I swear I look more svelte. I think that’s mostly perception because I’m high on endorphins, but I’ll keep my rose color glasses on.

My choice is the Bollywood Dance Workout that comes on Fit TV…check out the video for a preview. The moves are wild and carefree, it makes you feel like a big kid. You almost don’t notice you’ve been working out until you’re drenched in sweat at the end, a major plus in my book. It’s easier to exercise when it doesn’t feel like “work.” Get fit AND have fun? Skin SOS: Clean your makeup sponges

I take pretty good care of my skin, so when my forehead began breaking out I couldn’t figure out for the life of me what the culprit could be. As I began a process of elimination, and my focus went to my makeup tools. Specifically my makeup sponges. How long have I had them? When was the last time I cleaned them? Who knows?

It’s best to buy new sponges, but if you’re a super recycler like me, you can just clean them and buy new makeup sponges when the old ones start breaking down. I hit them with a little shampoo and rinsed them clean. I repeated the process three or four times, until I got them as clean as possible. Let them air dry, and they were like new. The sponges won’t get completely white again, but they’ll be clean enough where the old oils, makeup, and bacteria from your skin are removed.

Lo and behold, a week later my forehead is clearing up. Back to being fresh!

Coachella must-haves

When I posted the  lineup for Coachella 2010 back in January, the weekend of April 16 seemed so far off. Now, it’s about a week away, and it’s time to think about what to wear. Fashion is a huge part of the experience, music festivals inspire the need to express your style and individuality. I love people watching at shows and festivals, especially in a place like LA, where image rules.

Check out these must-haves from a couple of awesome independent designers,  Los Angeles based Kid Dangerous and New York based David & Young. The black and white fedora style sunhat is super cute. I already copped my “LA Don’t <3 U” tee for all the haters out there! Holla at me if you see me in the streets!

High Waist Skirts

Posted under: Fashion & Beauty

My sis and I usually talk fashion/hair/beauty to pass the work day, its a bond shared between us, passed down from my mom, the OG fly girl. This morning’s conversation centered around the high waist skirt. My sis sent me a pic of Lauren Conrad rocking a super cute red high waist flare skirt. The dilemma: where to find one?

I asked my friend Google what the deal was, and came up with a few adorable, budget-friendly options!

Redopin High Waist Skirt $48, YesStyle

Button Front High Waist Skirt, Urban Outfitters $48

Lipsy Bow Tulip Bow Skirt ASOS $27.35

High Waist Military Skirt ASOS $27.35

Nail Art: Get Minxed

Posted under: Fashion & Beauty

Last week, at church with my mom and sis (I’ve fulfilled my church attendance quota for 2010 by attending one service..heathen!) my mom saw this chick rocking super shiny, chrome nail color. “Toi!” she said. “Look at that girl’s polish! It’s so cute!” I said, “I think she’s wearing Minx stencils. I’ve seen celebs wearing them on the fashion blogs.” Moms was like, “Well, find out where they sell it, and get me some!”

She was so urgent and insistent, I had to find out where she can get Minxed, stat. Upon a little bit of research, I found that Minx is a sticker-like  nail covering containing all types of cool designs. It’s applied directly to your nails, but its not polish. The Minx website recommends having a certified professional apply the product, and offers a list of certified salons across the US and Internationally. All Lacquered Up has a great review of one woman’s Minx experience, check out the post.

Me and Moms aren’t interested in overpaying to have shiny, chrome gold nails, so I’ll just find the goldest gold at Alice’s Beauty Supply on Crenshaw. We’ll just take the Minx inspiration!

Would you get Minxed? Share your thoughts in the comments!

Head(band) Sprung

Posted under: Fashion & Beauty

I love wearing my hair in free-flowing styles, but I hate hair in my face. Headbands and cute hair clips pull your hair back and add a sprinkle of drama and sass to your hairstyle.

I am my hair.

Black hair has always been a political thing. Our hair defines us, and it doesn’t conform to mainstream standards of beauty. Black hair stands out no matter what.

I’ve recently decided to stop pressing my hair. I don’t wear a relaxer, but most of my adult life I’ve been a press + flatiron queen. Years of  excessive heat usage began damaging my hair, so I’ve been experimenting with natural styling techniques from braid outs, to twist outs, to roller sets. Occasionally I hit my roots with the flatiron after a roller set,  but I’m drastically reducing the amount of heat I use on my hair.

The results of my no-heat hair styling techniques have been pretty successful for the most part, but a few styles didn’t turn out so well. My family thinks I’m going through some weird phase because I refuse to press my hair. My grandma thinks I’m going through something, and my mom thinks I’m being anti-establishment. They’re right. I am going through something. I’m tired of damaging my hair to make other people comfortable. My hair goes back to its natural state anyway, so I’m working with it rather than against it.

I haven’t pressed my hair at all in 2010, and my hair is healthier and shinier. I’ve flat ironed the roots a couple of times after a roller set. The small amount of heat applied to the roots after a roller set doesn’t compare to the layers of heat I used to apply to my hair with blow drying, pressing, and flat ironing. I’ve traded mineral oil and petroleum based products for organic coconut oil and olive oil moisturizers. And my hair LOVES it. It drinks up the moisture, coils into beautiful curls, and dances in the wind.

Finding a natural style that works is a journey within itself, but it helps me to listen to my hair and work with it rather than against it. I think we need to have more respect for our hair, and not abuse it with heat and chemicals. We need to cherish what makes us unique.

Vans Saddle Shoes

Posted under: Fashion & Beauty

I had a pair of saddle shoes when I was 8 years old. When I rocked my saddle shoes, I was the freshest nerd on the playground. When they got too small for my growing feet, I was so sad. Vans’ saddle shoes are reminiscent of nerdy girls on the playground, who are now nerdy grown women who view the world as their playground. These shoes are super cute!

What do you think of Vans take on the saddle shoe?
