Don’t Start Nothing, Won’t Be Nothing

These two are giving me an Ike & Tina vibe...

Urban blogs are buzzing with the news that Mary J. Blige hauled off and punched her husband Kendu in the face at her album release party at M2 Lounge in NYC the other night. Supposedly he was flirting with other women at the party, and she got pissed. Mary was probably justified in feeling disrespected at Kendu’s actions, but violence in relationships is not okay, even where the woman is the aggressor.

While it was wrong for Mary to go Elin Woods on her man, her displeasure at his actions is understandable. It’s disrespectful for a guy to openly flirt with other women in the presence of his significant other. It’s humiliating to her, and shows that he doesn’t care about her feelings. Even if he flirts with other women when she’s not around (NOT hooking up with other chicks) it’s just an outlet for him to release sexual energy. If he’s using his penis to release sexual energy, that’s another issue. Harmless flirting when your girl isn’t around is fine, but openly flirting with other women in front of your significant other isn’t cool at all.

The moral of the story here:  fellas, don’t flirt with other women in front of your girl. It’s disrespectful. And ladies, don’t hit your men. Because if he has knee jerk reaction and hits you back, you’ll be ready to call the police and  Pookie & them.

Reality Show Roundup – Fantasia reality show airs Jan 11, 2010 on VH1

Posted under: R&B, Real Life Ish

Looks like Fantasia read the the Keyshia Cole manual for R&B singers to remain relevant. Fantasia’s reality series about her life airs on Jan 11, 2010 on VH1. Kudos to Fanny for getting herself together, looks like she’s trying to make it happen in 2010. I feel like 2010 will see many of us getting ourselves together, big things will be popping.

Gon head Fantasia, for working on that GED! Fanny is a hot mess most of the time, but I commend her for taking steps to complete her education. GED today, college degree tomorrow.

Fingerless Gloves: No Tips Needed

Posted under: Fashion & Beauty

I love  fingerless gloves, they’re so…anti. Are your hands cold, or warm? Fingerless gloves don’t make sense, but then again they make total sense. How else are you supposed to type on your iPhone in the cold? I love the absurdity of an accessory designed to keep you warm, but gives you freedom to use your fingertips. Fingertips on gloves are so limiting.

New Video: Tabi Bonney “Duhh”

Posted under: Uncategorized

I heart Tabi Bonney, his style is so unique and different. While everyone else wants to be a player pimp dope boy gangster thug with a soft side, Tabi’s new video, “Duhh” captures the old school essence of hip hop with hard drum beats and bass, break dancers, and girls with crazy shades and door knockers. Check it out!

Stand up if you hate the holidays

Posted under: Uncategorized

I’m not big on the winter holidays. Christmas is one of those holidays I despise, up there with Valentine’s Day. Sure, it’s nice to spend time with family and friends, celebrate the season of giving, blah blah. But some of us don’t want to participate in this whole hoopla of the holiday season. Some of us would rather opt out.

For some of us, the holiday season is a reminder of the things we’re lacking in our lives. Reminders of loved ones who passed away on or around Christmas. Of breakups, layoffs, or other losses. A stark awareness of the fact that you don’t have money to buy Christmas gifts. For some of us the holidays are a hankering reminder of what is no longer and what is lacking, even if you’re an optimistic person with the ability to cope any other time of year.

You shouldn’t have to fake the funk and pretend to be happy for holiday dinners and parties, when you would rather be at home, doped up on wine and vicodin, watching DVDs you’ve been meaning to catch up on.

I sound like a scrooge, wallowing in self-pity about how I hate the holidays. But I’m a believer of acknowledging and embracing your emotions, positive and negative. That’s the key to self-knowledge. You have to be able to keep it real with yourself.

If you love the holiday season, good for you. I hope you enjoy. But keep your cheer to yourself and DO NOT try to strong arm those who aren’t into the holiday BS.  Leave them be until mid-Janary, when people stop wishing others Happy New Year.

Peace,

Hip Hop Muse the Scrooge

New Music: Game Ft. Fabolous “Never Stop Hustlin”

Posted under: Hip Hop, Hip Hop

Game and Fabolous teamed up again on a new (?) track called “Never Stop Hustlin.” I like the collab with Game and Fab, they have good artistic chemistry on wax. It’s also a good to see east coast and west coast hip hop artists making music together. It’s all hip hop, it’s all love!

Winter Lovin’

The worst part about being single in the during the holidays  (aside from pretending to be happy at parties and gatherings) is not having a warm body next to you when you wake up on a cold, winter morning. Even if you’re generally content with singlehood, let’s face it.  It’s just better if you have someone to snuggle up with. Who can’t use the body heat? Especially if he has nice arms. Studies have shown cuddling is good for you. There are even cuddle party events out there (I think that’s taking it too far).

If you’re totally fine with being alone during winter, then this post isn’t for you. But if you would rather have a warm body next to you than not, keep reading. Honor your needs and desires, and grab a wintertime boo.

There’s nothing wrong with having a seasonal boyfriend or girlfriend. Many people in our lives are only there for a season, anyway. Why not have that special person that you can hang out with, have fun, and snuggle up with in front of the fireplace (or space heater)? By the time spring returns, you’ll be flirty and frivolous again, so make the best of winter and get a snuggle buddy!

So tell me. Do you have a winter boyfriend or girlfriend?

Mobile Food: Kogi BBQ’s Scion mobile kitchen

This is some ultimate hustler ish here…making food out the back of the car! The mobile food thing is super popular here in LA, with Korean taco trucks, Peruvian food trucks, breakfast-brunch trucks, and my homegirl running around town selling cupcakes and cookies around town (shouts out to Grufeete! Vandalizing your tastebuds!)

To be fair, mobile food isn’t new. It’s one of those things that’s come full circle and trendy again, like plaid shirts and color skinny jeans. I remember growing up in Compton, the ice cream truck would come around several times a day. We also had a donut truck make his rounds, along with the neighborhood hustle man selling meat out the back of his truck. Porterhouse steak, lobster, crab. Sure, you need a permit to sell food. And it’s probably more trustworthy (maybe, maybe not) if you buy it from the grocer. There was a sense of convenience and community involved in buying from an individual off the street. It’s almost like saying fuck you to the system and relying on your fellow man to help feed you and your fam. They came to you, you didn’t have to go to them. Back in the day we didn’t even have decent grocery stores in the hood, we had to go outside our immediate area to get fresh, quality food. Only in the past decade or so has the quality of grocers in Compton improved.

I went off on a tangent there; the whole point was to share this video where the Kogi truck dudes pimped out a Scion and made it  into a mobile food unit. It’s killer when they hit a button and the grill pops out the back of the trunk. That shit is ingenious, they need to copyright it.

Hustling food on the streets like a rapper selling mixtapes is so hip hop. Follow the homies selling sweets on the streets! @Grufeete
