Rasheeda is “Certified”

I always have an ear out for female emcees. They’re pretty sparse in the game, and really good ones are even further few in between. So when I saw Rasheeda’s video for “Boss Chick” on MTV Jams one Saturday, I had to stop and watch.

Initially I was ambivalent about her flow, because on “Boss Chick” I thought she sounded like a female Young Jeezy. But the more I thought about it, “Boss Chick” is a cute, radio friendly track that taps into the current ATL sound. Radio singles are simple and easy to understand. So I granted a pass on “Boss Chick”. I can’t judge a person based on a single. I need to hear more.

Alas, a press release comes across my RSS feed announcing the release of Rasheeda’s mixtape, “Certified.” Upon doing a little research, I found that Rasheeda has been in the game for a long time, and she’s the person responsible for that song “My Bubblegum.” Listening to her mixtape, I gained more respect for her. She’s dope. She can flow. She does not disappoint, lyrically and delivery-wise.

Talent aside, I like the fact that she presents herself as a lady. Her lyrics can be nasty at times, but she presents sexually charged lyrics metaphorically . That’s the mark of a lady. Remember back in the day when you were ear hustling when your mom and her sisters or friends were having girl talk, and they spoke in metaphors so you wouldn’t know who was doing ATM with whom? It’s kind of like that.

Even looking at Rasheeda’s photos and the way she presents herself, she’s fully clothed yet sexy. Real sex appeal isn’t in the amount of flesh shown, it’s in the silhouettes. The more skin you show, the less people respect you. Like it or not, that’s how it is.

So from one grown ass woman to another, Rasheeda is the real deal. I hope to see her succeed, as there is a place in hip hop for real, classy, independent women. She gets the Hip Hop Muse stamp of approval, something I very rarely give out. To me, Rasheeda is “Certified.”
