That’s What’s Up, Sotomayor

28 Jul 2009 by admin, No Comments »

After a rigorous, and what seems like never-ending process, Sonia Sotomayor has finally been approved to join the US Supreme Court.

Talk about making moves. Sotomayer’s story is not only inspirational because she’s the first Latina to be a member of the Supreme Court (though this is a major accomplishment) but also because of the hateration she’s had to ensue since she announced her intention. There are many, many people who did not want to see her take a seat on that bench. But Sotomayor kept it cool and assumed her position without breaking a sweat. It seems like it was hers to take, and maybe so since she was handpicked by the President. When the judiciary committe had her in the hotseat, grilling her like a rack of ribs, she deflected the negative questions and gave intelligent, thoughtful answers. That’s the type of woman I want representing on the bench.

Stories like hers are inspirational to minorities and those who feel hopeless. It’s not easy to rise above the bullshit life dishes to us, but it is possible to take those lemons and make sweet lemonade.
