Healthy Springtime Treat: Mango Salad

Posted under: Food, Homebody

Mango salad is one of my favorite warm weather treats. A tantalizing mix of mango, chile-salt and lime juice, I usually cop this from one of the Mexican street vendors spotted around town in a plastic ziploc bag for a couple of dollars. It’s cooling and refreshing while teasing my tastebuds with a mix of sweet, salty, heat, and zest.

Want to make this yourself? You’ll need:

1 mango

Juice of 1 lime

1/4 tsp dried chile powder

1/4 tsp salt

(Yields 1 serving, 2 if you’re sharing. I’m a single girl, I cook for one)

1. Cut mango into desired size. I found this helpful video on youtube on the best way to cut a mango (cause my ish doesn’t look so neat). Getting around the stone in the middle can be a little tricky.

2. Cut your lime in half, squeeze the juice of the lime over the mango. Try to resist the desire to eat it before seasoning.

3. Combine chile powder and salt together in a small bowl, making sure to smash together with your fingertips. This step is essential because the chile powder and salt need to be completely immersed to achieve maximum results.

4. Top mango-lime mixture with chile-salt seasoning. You can throw it in a little baggie and squish it around to distribute everything evenly, or you can lightly sprinkle the mango with the seasoning to give it a dusting of flavor.

5. Enjoy!

The beauty of this dish is that it can be tailored to your liking. Tyler Florence added jicama to his mango salad on the Food Channel. Some people like to use red pepper flakes instead of dried chile powder. I’ve also seen mango salad topped with cilantro, and I’ve seen red onion, green onion, and even avocado thrown into the mix. I encourage you to tweak it to your liking.

Shopping tip: Mangos are typically in season from late April to September. When selecting mangos, look for ones with a reddish blush to them. The red mangos are ripe. The redder, the sweeter. If they’re mostly green, they’re not ripe yet and will not be as sweet.

WTF are you wearing Christina Milian??

During my daily jaunt ’round the gossip blogs I spotted pics of The Dream and Christina Milian looking like a hot ass saggy crotch mess.

Sigh. Ms. Chris usually kills it with the style game, but as of late she’s been looking like trailer trash with the bad bleach blonde dye job and fugly clothes. Harem pants never have and never will be cute despite them being a fad. And the shoes…I just can’t.

That’s the sucky part about the resurgence of 80s and 90s style. The good and the bad make a comeback.

This outfit gets a HELL NO from me.

Get Your Space Right: Comic Book Shelves

Posted under: Homebody

I’ve been living in my new apartment nearly 6 months, and I’m finally starting to decorate. A friend and I were discussing innovative and creative ways to add character to your space, and he sent me a link to these crazy shelves spotted on Kanye’s blog.

These Comic Book shelves by Oscar Nunez are oddly dope. The shape isn’t typical of a shelving unit, and I seriously doubt it would be able to hold more than a few small books. But its a quirky way to add something to bare walls to hold stuff like figurines and knick knacks

Hot In Hurr: 5 Tips to Stay Cool When It’s Not

Posted under: Po Pimpin', West Coastin'

I don’t know what it’s like where you are readership, but it’s hot than a mutha here in Los Angeles! Today’s high topped 100 degrees so we’re toasting on the west coast. Even if it’s not burning up where you are, it will be soon. How do you  escape the heat in your hood? Here are 5 tips to help you maintain your cool.

1. Wear the least amount of fabric as possible. This doesn’t mean you should be walking around with your goodies exposed to the world, but less fabric keeps you cool. When at home, strip down to your skivvies and lay out in front of the fan.

2. Rock lightweight materials like cotton and linen, bring those toes out of hiding (don’t forget that pedi!), and shy away from dark colors (they absorb heat).

3. Water, water, water! Drink it, bathe in it, play in it. It’s a must to stay hydrated in the heat, lest you suffer dehydration. A cool shower helps soothe parched skin. Or head to the pool and splash around! If there’s no pool nearby grab the nearest waterhose or pop the nearest fire hydrant. You didn’t hear the last one from me O:-).

4. Go to the mall. No, not to shop, though if you find something cute pick it up, pick it up! The mall on a hot ass day = free air conditioning. Most of us can’t afford to buy an air conditioner for our homes so find a place that has it!

5. Place a cool cloth on warm areas. Or even go with an ice pack if you feel so inclined. The cool temperature will bring the heat level down a few notches.

Final tip – remember to use sunscreen. Whether you’re of fair pigmentation or of a darker skin tone, use sunscreen liberally. Black people can and do sunburn.

Is it hot in your hood yet? What do you do to keep cool? Holla at me in the comments!

Fantasia Getting a Reality Show on VH-1

American Idol winner Fantasia is the latest celeb to chronicle her life on VH-1. Set to air in early 2010, the show will follow her life as a performer and single mother.

Here’s to hoping the show will be along the same vein as Keyshia Cole’s reality show or even Being Bobby Brown. We all know Ms. Barrino keeps it way real, and we wouldn’t have her any other way.

Snoop Getting Waxed at Madame Toussaud’s Museum

Posted under: West Coastin'

Allhiphop.com is reporting that west coast legend Snoop Dogg will be immortalized at Madame Toussaud’s Wax Museum. The unveiling goes down on April 20th (ironic?) in London. Word is the wax statue will be wearing clothes donated from Snoop himself. They say he’s the first living hip hop star to become a wax statue at Madame Toussaud’s. Biggie and Pac are the only others. Biggups to Snoop, that’s definitely major.
